Hard Drive Help Pages
6. I have heard of drives referred to as
mode3, mode 4, UDMA33 and UDMA66, could you explain the differences?
The slowest IDE hard drive mode is Mode 0 followed by
Mode1, Mode2, Mode3,Mode4, UDMA33,UDMA66. The real important
difference between the modes is simply that they get faster
as the mode number increases (with the latest UDMA66 having
the fastest data transfer rate). Using a faster mode hard
drive can quite dramatically increase the speed of your computer
system. The only possible exception to this is where the motherboard
does not recognise the mode of the drive.
